How to sell your car in Dubai and the UAE

To sell your car in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, you need five things: a realistic price, a car and paperwork that are ready, a listing with good photos, safe viewings with serious buyers, and an RTA ownership transfer. Priced right, most cars sell within a few weeks.

Step 1: Find out what your car is worth

Start with a realistic price. Compare similar used cars for sale in the UAE right now: same make, model, year, mileage and spec. Buyers pay most for GCC-spec, accident-free cars with a full service history. SaleCar's free car valuation gives you a price range in under a minute, based on live UAE listings.

Step 2: Get the documents ready

What the seller needs to sell a car in the UAE:

  • Emirates ID (original)
  • The car's registration card (Mulkiya)
  • A loan clearance letter from the bank, if the car is financed
  • Service records, the spare key and any warranty papers (not required, but they raise offers)

What the buyer needs: their Emirates ID, a UAE driving licence and car insurance in their own name. See how to transfer car ownership in Dubai for the full RTA list.

Step 3: Prepare the car

  • Pay all traffic fines and Salik charges. The transfer can't go through with unpaid fines.
  • Remove your Salik tag. The tag is linked to you, not the car; leave it and you pay the next owner's tolls.
  • Settle any car loan and get the bank's clearance letter. This can take a few working days, so start early.
  • Clean it properly and fix small faults (bulbs, wipers, warning lights). It costs little and stops buyers from haggling over every flaw.

Step 4: Choose how to sell

On SaleCar you can list your car free, and buyers contact you directly. If you'd rather not deal with buyers, ask us for a cash offer on WhatsApp, or about consignment.

Step 5: Write a listing that sells

Buyers scroll past ads with dark or few photos. Take 10–20 photos in daylight: front, back, both sides, interior, the dashboard showing the mileage, the engine bay and the tyres. In the description, give specifics instead of general words: the spec (GCC or import), mileage, number of owners, "full agency service at 80,000 km", "new tyres in 2026", and any accident or repair. Honest ads get fewer wasted calls and sell faster.

Step 6: Meet buyers safely

  • Answer messages quickly; serious buyers contact several sellers at once.
  • Meet in daylight in a busy public place, and go with the buyer on any test drive.
  • If the buyer wants an independent inspection, agree to it. It builds trust.
  • Never hand over the car or the Mulkiya until the full payment has cleared. A bank transfer or manager's cheque is safer than cash.
  • Write a short bill of sale with the VIN, price, date, and both names and signatures.

Step 7: Transfer ownership through the RTA

In Dubai, the ownership transfer is done through the RTA, online in the RTA app or website, or at a service centre. Both parties need their Emirates ID, the buyer needs insurance in their name, and all fines must be paid first. Our car ownership transfer guide walks you through it. After the sale, cancel your insurance and ask about a refund.
